SIG has been an early adopter (and promoter) of the WELL Building Standard. We have three WELL AP’s in-house and one WELL Faculty, which is very rare experience. We have a very strong relationship with both Delos and the IWBI. Currently, our green building consulting firm is providing WELL Training/Charrettes/Gap Analyses nation-wide. The fact that we not only provide Consulting but also Engineering allows for a smoother WELL project – we can provide the “pre-testing” before the WELL Assessor is onsite at the end of the project. We run our WELL projects similar to a LEED project, with the exception of the pre-testing and prep for the actual WELL Assessor Testing. Charrette/Scorecard early, planning/support/documentation in the middle, and submittal at the end. Also, SIG prides itself in great hand-offs to the building operations team: “how do you run this LEED/WELL building and how do we keep this up?”

Every WELL building certification requires a trained WELL Assessor to be assigned by the certification body, GBCI. SIG’s engineering team is meeting the qualifications to be a third-party assessor, and thus has the technical skills necessary to help you comply in the application portion. Knowing that your consultant also works as a certification agent gives you the confidence that your application is strong.
The WELL Building Standard is the newest performance-based building certification available for new construction and existing operations around the world. The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) gathered a team of doctors, scientists, and practitioners to develop and peer review the standard’s performance benchmarks. The standard uses seven concepts to define health and wellness in the built environment.
The WELL Building Standard v1.0 was made public in Fall 2014 and the first building was certified in Spring 2016. Read about it here. IWBI has partnered with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) for third-party certification. GBCI also certifies LEED green building applications and strong efforts were made to synergize the two ratings systems. Three project typologies are available within the WELL Building Standard, and more are developing in pilot stages.
